Why have nearly 100 Book Groups chosen Standing Still? Author visits, free DVDs, and now, named one of Simon & Schuster's
top book club picks!
Standing Still is a genre-crossing story that book groups have praised for its writing, its raw portrayal of marriage, and its sensitive handling of activism and immigration. One book club host called it “a simpler, starker Bel Canto.” Its ambiguous ending, plot twists, and deeply flawed characters have inspired lively debate among the groups who've read it. I'd love to meet with your group in person or via Skype to answer questions like the ones below. Or, for a limited time, I'm offering a free Exclusive Book Group DVD. Email me at kellysimmonswrites@yahoo.com.
Q: Standing Still is your first novel, but you have been writing fiction for more than a decade. When did the central idea for this novel first come to you?
A: I’d like to say that it percolated for years . . . that I polished it for months, like a marble in my pocket . . . .but that would be a lie. The idea came in a flash of inspiration after a terrible meeting with my former agent. I was sitting at Penn Station in New York, massively depressed, when Tom Wolfe sat down next to me. (Am I sure it was Tom Wolfe? Well, does anyone else wear white spats in December?) I decided it was a sign that I would be published, and I came up with the idea on the train.
